Sturgis Road Biking

Road Biking is a common past time in Sturgis, not as common as Mountain Biking in Sturgis, but there are many nearby roads that are conducive to an enjoyable road ride.

Common Routes

The most common route in and out of Sturgis on a road bike is via Vanocker Canyon, this route climbs for around 5 miles to the south of town before branching into a series of scenic roads with appropriate speed limits for enjoyable two-wheeled adventures. The next most common route is the Whitewood Service Road, which provides access to another series of options and the towns of Spearfish, Deadwood, and Belle Fourche to the west of Sturgis.

Sturgis Gran Fondo

NOTE: The Sturgis Gran Fondo is no longer a thing, but the route is still a great ride sans the short stretch of highway to Mt. Rushmore.
Sturgis plays host to a major road cycling event each year, the Sturgis Gran Fondo. This bike event takes the Vanocker Canyon route south all the way to Mount Rushmore. The Fondo event course is an out-and-back, passing through the towns of Nemo and Keystone. The course also makes use of some of the most scenic and fun to ride roads in the Black Hills, including Vanocker Canyon, Nemo Road, and Norris Peak Road.
