Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is an annual motorcycle rally held the first full week of August in Sturgis, SD. The Sturgis Rally is one of the largest gatherings of motorcycle riders and motorcycles in the world.

Despite “Rally Week” of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally officially starting on the first Monday each August and ending the following Sunday, unofficially, the event spans more than three weeks. Some vendors even set up their operations in Sturgis as early as six or eight weeks prior to the official start date.

The Rally is also no longer confined to Sturgis, it has really turned into a Black Hills-wide event. Many of those who venture to the Black Hills for the Rally only spend a day or two in Sturgis, because while it is the center and a must-visit, there are a plethora of must-see and must-do attractions all over the Hills. The Rally is even often referred to as the Black Hills Rally, Black Hills Motorcycle Rally, or Black Hills Motorcycle Classic.

Visitors to the Sturgis area often schedule their trips around the Rally unless they are specifically planning on taking part in the motorcycle event. Hotels are much more expensive during this period of the summer, and traffic borders on unmanageable in many areas.

Sturgis has an extensive network of campgrounds to support the hundreds of thousands who descend on the city each August. These rally campgrounds cater to RV’s, tent campers, and many also offer cabin rentals or other unique accommodations. The majority of these campgrounds are only open for business for a few weeks during the year around the time of the Sturgis “Bike Week”.
